Five years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf of Mexico, both Republican and Democrat officials in Louisiana say the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, put in place after the BP oil spill, is now that state’s biggest problem.

Oil spill will cause more damage than Katrina
Almost half of Orleans Parish residents, 49 percent, said the oil spill will cause more damage than Katrina, compared with 40 percent who said the hurricane was more damaging, according to a poll released Aug. 13 by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The survey was conducted May 26-June 27 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Local officials have been critical of Obama’s decision to impose a moratorium, set to expire Nov. 30, on drilling in waters deeper than 500 feet. The moratorium idled 33 rigs and may cost 23,247 jobs, by the administration’s estimate. Two rigs, owned by Houston-based Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc., have since left the Gulf to drill elsewhere. Has it really come to this? Yahoo News’ Brett Michael Dykes reports that BP paid busloads of temporary cleanup workers to show up as stage props for President Obama’s visit to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup operations on Grand Isle.
Dykes quoted Jefferson Parish councilman Chris Roberts who said “the overnight contingent of workers was there mainly to furnish a Potemkin-style backdrop for the event while also making it appear that BP was firmly in command of spill cleanup efforts. New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU reports that the workers were paid $12 an hour and came mostly from neighboring Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.” Read more at the Washington Examiner
