UPDATED: N. Korea Says It Conducts 2nd Nuclear Test also test-fired a short-range, ground-to-air missile Monday

North Korea defiantly declared Monday that it carried out a powerful underground nuclear test — reportedly many times larger than a 2006 test — in a major provocation in the escalating international standoff over its rogue nuclear and missile programs.

President Barack Obama said a nuclear test would constitute an act of “blatant defiance” of the U.N. Security Council and a violation of international law.Read More

U.S. Says N. Korea Nuke Test of ‘Grave Concern’
“North Korea is directly and recklessly challenging the international community,” Obama said in a statement. “North Korea’s behavior increases tensions and undermines stability in Northeast Asia.”

Obama said Washington will be working in the days ahead with the Security Council and other nations that have been trying to pursuade North Korea to give up on its nuclear ambitions. Read More

North Korea fires two more missiles

NKorea’s bomb test adds to atomic threat
The Obama administration, which said the North’s action invited stronger, unspecified international pressure, has consistently called for Korean denuclearization but seemed not to have anticipated a deepening nuclear crisis.

Just two weeks ago, the administration’s special envoy for disarmament talks with North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, said during a visit to Asian capitals that “everyone is feeling relatively relaxed about where we are at this point in the process.” If so, they are no longer.

North Korea conducted its first atomic test in 2006 and is thought to have enough plutonium to make at least a half-dozen nuclear bombs. It also is developing long-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, in defiance of U.N. actions. Read More

Barack now we shall see how you handle the NK nuke issue! Will you be weak as you have shown with Iran and the Gitmo terrorist? Or will you be strong as an American president should be? Or will you try and buy your way out of this crisis by printing a few trillon dollars? We shall be watching for the answer to the questions above!

  2. Unfortunately, gtp, I believe you are correct. We will probably cede to N Korea also. Remember when people made fun of Bush for speaking of the axis of evil?

  3. What exactly would you like to see the President do with North Korea? What is strong, in your definition? Starting yet a third war, with an already stretched-thin military? Launching a few nukes towards Kim Il Sung to get him to stop?

  4. What exactly would I like to see Ba-rat do?
Lets start with Obama not cutting missile defense, stop bankrupting America with his big spending spree to BIG COMPANIES and use the money instead to rebuild our military supplies. Stop trying to get rid of our Nuke supplies and not do what the democratic Clinton did which was to give NK everything he could think of including oil. In other words Obama looks and acts weak to the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Russia and Al Qaeda so he makes America unsafe!

Obama said himself that America has no more money! He can blame himself for that. Someone has to put a stop to NK building nukes even if it takes bombing to do it. I think Japan will now start building nukes because of NK.

Everything should be on the table except giving more to blackmailing NK. Just to add the United Nations is useless so we can not rely on it!
