Australian Wildfires Could Fuel ‘Forest Jihad’ Terrorists, Experts Say

In November, an extremist Web site called on Muslims to launch a “forest jihad” in Australia, Europe, Russia and the United States. The posting, which quoted imprisoned Al Qaeda terrorist Mustafa Setmariam Nasar, said setting forest fires was legal under “eye-for-an-eye” Islamic law.

“Scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels’ forests when they do the same to our lands,” the posting read.

The author of the posting indicated that Nasar — also known as Abu Musab Al-Suri — was urging terrorists to use sulfuric acid or gasoline to start the fires.

“Forest fires track well with the latest discussion trends seen in the Al Qaeda forums — easy to do, big impact, low security risk, high media coverage,” said Al Qaeda expert Jarret Brachman. Read more

US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to “start forest fires”, claiming “scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels’ forests when they do the same to our lands”. Oh my, don’t they know that the muslims are going to get mad and condemn the people for saying anything against them. You can’t be saying bad things about Muslims! AUSTRALIA has them now and so will America be next in line for these groups?

  1. This story is total nonsense. The recent fires had nothing to do with any of this. No sane Australian (and I hope I am one) would give this more than a nanosecond of thought.

  2. Oh, great. That’ll really piss off the environmentalists. Maybe they (the enviros) will finally get a clue and start suing the terrorists and putting them out of business financially.
And where’s AL GORE! This has to be the mother of all blaspheme to him. Just think of all the CO2 this creates.

  3. I have to go along with you Neil because the page in my post is the only one I can find at the moment. If anyone find any other news group with this information please let us all know. Thanks Neil

  4. OOPs I found that this is being also reported on Homeland Security page

So I will have to take their word Neil!

  5. Neil

I, too, hope that you are sane, but why is the thought of jihadis setting fires so nonsensical? They’ve shown quite a knack for death and destruction in recent years, after all.

  6. Where ever you live, it’s easy to see how much havoc a 50 cent lighter can wreak. Of course seeing the speed at which countries like England and France have capitulated to the extremist demands of Wahabists, “Jihad fires” may not be necessary.

  7. @ lukemcgook

It is very unhelpful in this case too even think on these lines, and has been dismissed by those most concerned.

SYDNEY – Australian police Wednesday dismissed any suggestion the wildfires that have killed more than 180 people could have been started by Islamic militants waging “forest jihad”.

The idea has started to turn up on Internet blog sites after reports last year that a group of Islamic extremists had urged Muslims to light bushfires as a weapon of terror.

Police believe some of the fires that ripped through southeast Australia since the weekend were started by arsonists, but a spokesman said there was no suspicion they were Islamic terror attacks.

“None at all, absolutely nothing, zero,” Superintendent Ross McNeill told AFP.

“We usually rank possibilities on a scale of 0 to 10 – this would be on a negative scale,” he said.

  8. Neil: Police believe some of the fires that ripped through southeast Australia since the weekend were started by arsonists, but a spokesman said there was no suspicion they were Islamic terror attacks.

Goodtimepolitics: So they do think some was started by arsonists? And they don’t know who the arsonists are so to speak? So why couldn’t it be muslims setting the fires, and since there are so many at one time I would be suspicion of a Islamic terror attacks. We were warn back in Nov.

  9. They have arrested at least one arsonist and apparently have good clues about other possibilities.

It could be Martians too, or whatever you want. That’s how conspiracy theories work. Or it might be as some have suggested God punishing Victoria for its liberal abortion laws.

It could also be — and in one case probably is — a power line brought down by high winds.

It does not help in focusing on real issues regarding Islamist or any other terrorism to run down blind alleys.

  10. Then you’re saying not to use all leads to solve who set the fires and you seem to really not want the investigators to look at Muslims!

Knowing the above, I would think that any fire investigator worth his salt would check this out first and formost!

  11. I suspect they (police and intelligence and others) have considered it — and you’ve seen the police answer already.

These fires have been bad, and while I am not in Victoria I have seen here in NSW over the years just what bushfires can do. One of my earliest memories is of seeing the entire horizon in flames and the ground yellow with filtered sunlight.

The Victorian fires will no doubt yield to the usual explanations. You can be sure the authorities here are being very thorough and really don’t need us bloggers to tell them where to look.

By the way, did you know that, just as we helped them during the tsunami, Indonesia has sent people skilled in identifying victims through scientific means to assist our coroners? Being nice to our biggest (Muslim) neighbour isn’t all that stupid, is it, especially since it is probably helping reduce the terrorist threat there and here to do so. Even John Howard was all for that.

Do you believe the recent California fires were such a jihadist plot too?

  12. First

No sane Australian (and I hope I am one) would give this more than a nanosecond of thought.

    then

I suspect they (police and intelligence and others) have considered it — and you’ve seen the police answer already.

So, you suspect the police were insane but came to their senses after no more than a nanosecond.

Seriously, since they’ve shown themselves capable of blowing up planes, trains, boats, buses, nightclubs, pizza parlors, all manner of buildings large and small, and, of course, themselves, I fail to see why you automatically eliminate muslims as suspects in a crime so straightforward as arson.

  13. Neil: Being nice to our biggest (Muslim) neighbour isn’t all that stupid, is it, especially since it is probably helping reduce the terrorist threat there and here to do so.

Goodtimepolitics: Yes we also was nice to the muslim countries and even gave the terrorist that flew the planes into the World Trade Center killing 3000 Americans…yes we gave those terrorist pilot training! Sure help reduce terrorist here didn’t it! What did you mean by “reduce the terrorist threat there” ?

  14. The threat in Indonesia which gave us the Bali bombings and more. There is a reasonably cooperative government in Indonesia at the moment.

  15. Most are thought to have been started deliberately as a cheap and quick way to clear land, but experts say some – especially on peaty land – could have started by themselves.
Malaysia’s environment minister, Azmi Khalid, accused Indonesia of not doing enough to solve the problem in today’s Star newspaper.

Seem that at least one has been caught, a volunteer fireman at that!

  17. “Brendan Sokaluk”? Have a government commission check out his birth certificate. Bet he’s one of dem Muslims.

  18. larry keeps making my job easy of finding so much wrong with crooks and terrorist such as Brendan Sokaluk if in fact he set one of the fires. Keep up the good work larry of showing us the way we don’t want to go!

  19. What I have been trying to say all along Neil is that the Muslim extremists has said “Scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels’ forests when they do the same to our lands,”
So they should at least be investigated because of what they said!

If there was a murder by hanging and someone posted on a web site that they had ask friends to hang someone, would you not investigate the person. I say the same goes for the fires. Do you agree with that Neil?

  20. Since you ask, I have actually posted on some related issues since: I’ll give the tag so Akismet doesn’t zap this for too many links. 🙂

Yes, everything relevant should be investigated.
